The provision of independent and reliable information
was the fundamental remit of the RAL Institute when it was jointly
established in 1925 by the state and leading organizations from trade
and industry. Since its inception, the RAL Institute has committed
itself to promoting specific and tangible quality standards for products
and services by defining performance criteria and by providing a uniform
and independent means of certification and labelling.
The chief concern of the RAL Institute is
quality assurance, i.e. the safeguarding of standards in the production
of goods or the performance of services by means of clearly defined
targets. These quality assurance targets are drawn up by RAL in
conjunction with the relevant professional and commercial groups,
official bodies (such as the Federal Ministry of Economics, the
Federal Office for Materials Testing, the Federal Environmental
Agency etc.) and qualified institutions within the industrial, trade
and commercial sectors. The resulting standards and rules are published
by RAL and are thus accessible to the general public.
